Time to enter Pangbourne dragon race
May 31, 2012
Dragons will be on the loose next weekend for Pangbourne’s annual boat race.
The Rotary Club of Pangbourne holds the Charity Dragon Boat Challenge on the Thames as part of Pangbourne Village Fete.
As 2012 is the year of the dragon, the group hope the Saturday, June 9, event will be the biggest yet.
The dragon boats, which are authentic and artistically decorated, race in threes over the 250m course, each crewed by 16 people and led by a tom-tom drummer.
Over the years teams have raised more than £75,000 for charity.
Rotary Club spokesman Les Jones said: “It is a really fun day and all that is needed is that the crew is relatively fit, and everybody involved enjoys a day in the sun by the river in the middle of a very popular village fete.”
Most crews use the event to raise money for their chosen charities.
