Sculptures, drawings and artists’ books inspired by the Swinley Forest fires last year are on display at a new exhibition.

‘Palimpsest’ opened last week with a private viewing at Gallery@49 Contemporary Art Space, Broadway, which 20 people attended.

Tonia Maddison, who created the art, said: “I went for a walk after the fires to see what had happened and to look at the damage.

“I was struck by the colours – there were a lot of very black tree trunks but the tips still had leaves and autumnal colours.

“The colours and textures really inspired me.”

The artwork will be on display on Saturday, May 12, from midday to 4pm.

Tonia, co-founder of the ReOrsa artists’ group, which runs the gallery, will be on hand to answer questions.
