Visit Beale Park's Titanic exhibition

By David Millward
April 13, 2012

A Titanic display is now on show at Beale Park in Lower Basildon.

The exhibition in the Park’s Pavilion features three models of the ship from the park’s model boat collection and an array of associated replica materials.

The display marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking after hitting an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton on April 15, 1912, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,500 people.

Richard Howard, curator of the model boat collection at Beale Park, said: “The sinking of the Titanic was a tragic but influential event in our history and we felt that it was appropriate to commemorate the occasion.”

Nearly three years since the Beale Park rail disaster, isn't it? Fingers crossed for a TV show or ten about that moment in history.

The Titanic sunk a hundred years ago - get over it ! billions have died since then in all sorts of accidents. It seems quite distasteful compared to the losses in the first world war to harp on about a posh boat that was sunk by a massive ice cube.

Why? Seriously, why? A park that didn't exist when the ship sank in a town that has no connection to the ship. Why?
