A massive new fireworks display is being planned for this year, which organisers hope will raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Reading Lions Club will be holding a Fireworks Extravaganza on Saturday, November 3, at Reading Town FC’s ground at Scours Lane, which can accommodate between 7,000 and 8,000 people.
Before the display, a poster competition will be held among schools and the winner will be announced by the mayor.
Nearby Mason’s Fairground will operate, with gates opening at 5pm, and there will be food and drink available with the football club bar open.
Entry to the extravaganza will be £5 for adults and £3 for children and there will be a family ticket (two adults and two children) for £15.
Stuart Rowsell, a member of the fundraising committee, said it would be the first of two major fundraisers in November, with a Heroes’ Dinner in Windsor in aid of forces charities on November 17, which is expected to raise around £24,000.
He added: “We reckon to make about £10,000 from the fireworks.”
The low price, he said, was designed to be affordable for families.
He said: “For a family, what can you buy for £15 if you want fireworks? Better to come to a professional event.”
Mr Rowsell said Reading Lions were fortunate to have the services of Clive Doyle and Brian Treadwell who look after health and safety at Madejski Stadium and at QPR. Fireworks will be provided by a Basingstoke firm called Pyrotastic.
Flyers will go out around West Reading prior to the night and the Lions are discussing issues such as parking.
The fireworks will be set up on land at the northern end of the ground and crowds will be allowed as close as the halfway line.
They will also be able to use the terracing and stands, and floodlights will be on until the fireworks start at 7pm.
Money raised will be split between local charities.
Reading Lions will be holding a video race night on Friday, March 30, at 7.30pm.
The cost is £10 per person which includes supper. Contact Rocco Zottarelli on (0118) 987 2776.
