Are you brave enough to abseil The Blade?

Jump at the chance of getting roped in to abseil down Reading’s tallest building for the hospital robot appeal.

The charity abseil will take on the dizzy heights of The Blade’s 128-metre tall structure that stands proud above the town, offering a unique opportunity to take in the sights as well as completing a daredevil challenge.

Taking to the roof of The Blade brave participants will abseil down all 14 floors, the equivalent of 32 double decker buses.

A souvenir T-shirt will be given to everyone who completes the challenge on Sunday, September 12, and all you need to do to take part is raise £250 for the Robbie the Robot appeal at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The Blade opened last April and the first person to descend over its glistening white roof was now-retired former Labour Reading West MP Martin Salter who marked his last year in Parliament with the historic challenge.

So if he can do it, then anyone (aged over 18) can do it although places are strictly limited so those interested should sign up fast.

The abseil is the latest initiative to raise the £1 million needed to keep Robbie the Robot operating in Reading. Robbie is a state-of-the-art machine which performs operations including prostate removal and offers a less intrusive procedure that in turn offers a quicker recovery time.

Gill Valenti, fundraising manager for the appeal, said: “We are extremely grateful to The Blade – both the owners and the management team – for their generosity and co-operation. It has, quite literally, allowed us to get this amazing event off the ground.

“The abseil is suitable for first timers as no experience is necessary and full instruction will be given by a qualified team, on the day.

“That said, in view of the unique location, we feel sure that the event will also appeal to experienced abseilers.

“Spaces are strictly limited, so I would urge would-be abseilers to sign up without delay.”

For more information or to sign up, call Gill Valenti on 01252 844639 or gill@gillvalenti.co.uk.
