Filling the town with laughter
April 27, 2007
A TRIO of charismatic stand-ups will share the spotlight at a central Reading venue later next month.
Award winning comedienne Josie Long, heavyweight Angelo Tsarouchas and no-nonsense funny man Arnab Chanda will form the line-up of the event at the South Street arts centre on Friday, May 25.
Josie, a graduate from Oxford uni, was so young – 17 years old – when she won her first comedy award in 1999, she was not able to drink the bottle of champagne presented to her.
After winning the BBC New Comedy Award that year, she continued her studies and went on and filmed an episode of Channel 4’s The Last Chancers, and then scooped her second comedy gong last year when she was named If.Com Eddy’s Newcomer Award Winner 2006.
Described as one of the country’s bright new comical hopes, her routines are characterised by intense and surreal rants.
Weighing in at a good 350 pounds, Angelo, who was born in Montreal from Greek parents, specialises in knockout punch lines.
Apart from touring the world with his comic routines, the big man has also made it up to the screen, starring alongside world famous actors including Robert de Niro, Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington.
Arnab is also an award-winning comic; he got his hand on an Amused Moose Comedy Award last year and the Jongleurs New Act Competition in 2005.
Born in England, he left when he was six years old and came back 17 years later after spending time in India, Saudi Arabia and the US.
The show at the town centre venue will start at 8.30pm and tickets cost £9.
For bookings, call the box office on (0118) 960 6060.
Jongleurs Comedy Club
THE next three days are set to be full of laughter at Reading’s Jongleurs Comedy Club when a bunch of stand-up’s turn up.
Drew Barr, Stefano Paolini, Harvey and Rudi Lickwood will take the stage at the Friar Street venue this evening, as well as tomorrow and Saturday nights.
The shows kick off at 8.30pm, but doors normally shut half an hour before, and there is dancing until 2am.
Tickets cost £8 on Thursdays, £14 on Fridays and £15 on Saturdays.
For bookings, call the box office on 0870 787 0707.
South Street Arts Centre
NEXT month’s comedy line-up in Reading will kick off with a visit from the grand John Shuttleworth.
The singer organist turned master of character comedy will head for the South Street arts centre on Tuesday, May 1, with his new show, In With My Condiments.
The show starts at 8pm and tickets cost £10. For bookings, call the box office on (0118) 960 6060.
