World-famous DJ Grooverider is coming to Reading tomorrow night in one of his first gigs since being released from a Dubai jail.
The drum and bass artist and Radio 1 DJ will be performing at Bar Mango in a rare appearance after he was jailed in November last year for drug offences.
Grooverider, real name Raymond Bingham, had arrived at Dubai airport to play a gig when he was stopped and searched by customs.
They found a small amount of marijuana in his pocket and he was jailed for four years but released early after a pardon from the Dubai Royal Family.
Steve Harris, from Bassment Presents who booked the gig, said: “Since he has come out of jail I have been and seen him twice in London and it is like Grooverider at his best is back.
“There was a phase where he was not playing the most amazing music and I think he is back to doing the style of sets he was doing four or five years ago.
“In Dubai he seems to have had some time to reflect and now is back doing the Grooverider sets he is famous for and we are delighted to have been able to book him for Bar Mango.”
Grooverider will be playing a set at the Hosier Street venue to a crowd lucky enough to witness his comeback.
Speaking to the BBC about his ordeal in the appalling conditions, he said: “When I heard four years, I kind of dropped a little bit, I nearly fell on the floor.
“They don’t have toilets, they have holes in the ground. There’s eight people to a cell and they do treat you alright don’t get me wrong but it’s just horrible seeing so many people come in for nothing.
“The despair and the unhappiness. That’s more battering than anything else.”
Bassment Presents are thrilled to have the ‘Big Don’ of DJs performing to an expected sell out audience.
Mr Harris said: “I am really excited about it because I know how rare it is to get a big act with the amount of notice we have had.
“It can take up to six months to get someone as big as this so we are really glad and we hope all his many fans take this opportunity to see the master at work, I can’t wait.”
