Night out at Café du Sport
November 08, 2007
Café du Sport
St Mary’s Butts Reading
Thanks to the perseverance of THC and Will Blaze dragging people off the street and making them listen to Dubstep through their headphones, Reading now has a thriving Dubstep scene.
I had to be in on it so, Thursday night being the first of the month, I headed over to Café Du Sport to find out what it was all about.
With a warm welcome and a deep bass it didn’t take long to feel one of the regular crowd.
Dubstep is an underground music scene that started to develop over the past 18 months.
It originated on the streets of Croydon and is now a worldwide scene. 3.5 Records is passionate about spreading its love for the music, and has put on this free night at the Friar Street pub so it is accessible to all.
The label is purely for Dubstep and we were lucky to have a big DJ – N-Type – to help launch the night.
3.5 Records started the night about eight months ago in Iguana, and has crossed over the street more recently.
Local talent are able to showcase their skills alongside those from further afield – Tes la Rok from Helsinki being a recent visitor.
Tonight, Vista from Second Drop Records got everyone nicely in the mood, until the headliner, Wedge from Bristol, took the decks. Wedge is part of a Dubstep Crew that is doing well on the global scene.
I should have known Timmy Boomkat would have been mixed-up in this night and it was no surprise to find him here.
Just back from Amsterdam after DJing in The Vinyl Café for The Vinyl Crew (back there soon as a resident DJ) and playing on Internet radio www.deepfm.nl, it was hard to get him to sit down for five minutes as he has been on the move so much.
Last month, he was playing Static in Madrid, and in March and August he was DJing in Hamburg representing Reading.
He will be bringing his internationally respected talents to Plug n Play along with Miss Lizzie, Jaxx and The Duke in the back room for Glowball VI on Thursday, December 6.
Other DJs on the night will be Pye, CPR Craig, Rude Mamma, Fritzfactor and special guest DJ Pod (Ripsnorter).
Expect the best of Underground Breaks, Psy-trance, and House from 10pm until 6am.
Tickets are £6 on the door, advance tickets for £5 are available from festivalweather.com.
