Author's powerful message about climate change

The powerful story of one man’s journey through famine-stricken Africa to discover people who have been displaced by climate change is told in a new book by Caversham author John Madeley.

Let Live: A Bike Ride, Climate Change And The CIA follows journalist David Fulshaw as he meets people who have been forced to flee their homes because of climate change, largely caused by Western countries.

Set in 2007 in the dying stages of the George W Bush presidency, he tells of the West’s failure to curb carbon emissions and attacks US policy which he claims is invading the sovereignty of other countries.

His articles are strong enough to attract the attention of the CIA who decide that he cannot be allowed to besmirch the name of the US and a plot is hatched to remove him.

The book draws on the author’s own considerable knowledge and experience from his time working as a freelance journalist in Africa for The Guardian and The Observer.

It has received praise from Green Party MP Caroline Lucas who described is as “entertaining, sharp, penetrating, an incisive account” on the effect climate change is having on poorer nations.

Mr Madeley, 77, of Woodford Close, said: “It cuts through the science of climate change to deal with its human side through the eyes of an environmental journalist.

“The reason behind writing it was to use it as a way of involving people in the debate that may not want to read a factual book through an interesting story.

“There is a stong message there and it is quite hard-hitting. People are suffering and it is not going to get any better unless we act together.

“It is a reminder to the West not to forget the people that are affected by these issues, not just to governments, but to all of us on the importance of reducing emmissions.”

Mr Madeley is the author of 10 books and articles on development issues including Hungry For Trade: How The Poor Pay For Free Trade.

The book will be officially launched at the RISC World Shop in London Street, Katesgrove, on Monday, October 17.

It is published by Londstone Books and priced £8.99.

Sorry Mr Madeley but your book is about someone riding a bike in Africa having flown there burning up several tons of carbon en route is a flawed plot line to save the world from climate change...

Wow, getreading promoting the same old drivel. About time Africa sorted itself out, after decades of handouts and corruption and blaming the West.
