Community litter picks being held this weekend

By Rhodri Andrews

Neighbours are needed to help the borough clean up its act in the annual litter pick this weekend.

Wokingham Borough Council has teamed up with neighbourhood action groups and parish councils to help make the borough and brighter and cleaner place to live, while restoring some civic pride.

Communities will be filling black bags with rubbish in Arborfield, Barkham, Charvil, Crazies Hill, Dinton Pastures, Earley, Evendons Neighbourhood Action Group, Hurst, Norreys and Wescott ward, Shinfield Rise, Sonning parish, Swallowfield, Twyford, Wargrave, Wokingham town centre, Woodley and Winnersh on Saturday and Sunday.

Finchampstead Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG) will be collecting litter on Sunday, April 28.

The Big Tidy up is in its fifth year and last year more than 800 bags of rubbish were collected from parks, community areas and village centres.

Litter picks and bags will be provided, but those taking part should wear protective gloves, suitable clothing and sturdy shoes.

For more information and meeting locations visit www.wokingham.gov.uk/litterpick.

The problem is that a lot of the litter is created by the council. For example every Tuesday after the refuse collection I have to pick up the litter from my front garden that has been spilt by the collectors. I know my garden is positioned so that it acts as a trap for the litter but it should not be necessary.

However I do believe that there should be a weekend when the whole community concentrates on a clear up: not just of public areas but also of their own gardens.

I mentioned Canada previously. What I did not say was that people who failed to cleanup their own property could be fined or charged by the council to have it cleared.

Yes, all of us who are community minded people clear up the pavement outside our homes weekly but, what the council are asking people to do, is the job WBC has already charged us for them to do on our behalf: I do not expect to pay £200 a month council tax(rip off tax) and then be expected to carry out the work myself just so that a hi-viz clad councillor can pose for a photo opportunity saying how well they've all done!!

These post winter clean ups are a major feature in many Canadian Towns. They concentrate not just on public spaces but also on people cleaning up their own gardens. They are supported by a very visible presense of the town council environment teams who collect and transport away collected rubbish throughout the weekend. Local charities also collect better unwanted goods and hold sales the following weekend.
