Get your gardens ready for annual Green Fingers competition

By Julie Spencer
March 07, 2013

The countdown to spring has started with the launch of Wokingham’s annual Green Fingers gardening competition.

There are categories for front gardens, back gardens, window boxes and containers and judging by members of Wokingham Horticultural Association will be in July.

The winning displays are awarded gold, silver, bronze or highly commended certificates and prizes are gardening vouchers.

The annual competition is run by Wokingham Town Council and the entries, together with displays by schools, allotment holders and businesses, will form the town’s entry for the Thames and Chilterns in Bloom 2013 competition.

The theme for the regional contest is Branching Out and members of the town council said they hoped gardeners would reflect the theme in their displays.

Councillor Lee Gordon-Walker, chairman of the amenities committee, said: “Over many years Green Fingers has gone from strength to strength.

“There are many gardeners in Wokingham who underestimate what they achieve in their gardens.

“I encourage everyone not to be shy and retiring and to enter today.”

People can enter their own garden or nominate the garden of a neighbour or friend using the form here, right, or via the town council website www.wokingham-tc.gov.uk.

Entry forms are also available at the Information Centre, based at the town hall, in Market Place.

Don't forget Wokingham has a thriving Horticultural Society which has a trading shed in Ormonde Road and which is much cheaper than the equivalent products from garden centres. You will also get lots of help and advice if you want it as well as 4 shows a year. Find the details on the internet. WHS.
