Top RNLI award for fundraiser

By Jon Nurse
February 12, 2013

A fundraising chairman will receive a top award for more than three decades of support for life-saving heroics at sea.

Michael Porter, 74, of Station Road, Wargrave, will be awarded a gold badge from the RNLI in May following the excellent results of the Wargrave, Twyford and District RNLI fundraising branch.

The accolade is the highest honour available to shore-based volunteers.

“This is an award I am both delighted and honoured to be given,” Mr Porter said. “We get a terrific level of support from the local population and it shows people have tremendous respect for those who put their lives at risk.”

The branch has existed since the 50s and raises around £10,000 each year.

Mr Porter has lived in Wargrave for 40 years with his wife Wendy, who serves as secretary for the branch.
