Poppy Appeal volunteers congratulated for their hard work

By Laura Herbert
February 11, 2013

Volunteers who helped Wokingham Poppy Appeal raise a record £32,000 were thanked at an awards ceremony.

The annual Poppy Awards evening rewarded a number of people who gave up their time for two weeks last year to collect for the appeal, which raises funds for the Royal British Legion supporting Armed Forces and their families.

A large number of businesses supported the appeal, and were also presented with awards at Wokingham Town Hall, in Market Place, on Tuesday, January 29.

More than 20 awards were presented by Wokingham town mayor Councillor Peter Lucey.

David Dunham, Poppy Appeal organiser, said: “Special awards were presented to Peter Allen, Susannah Allen, Eddie Weaver, Joe Pester, Kay Tott and Barbara Houghton.”

The 2012 appeal raised £32,865.72 – a huge £11,000 more than the previous year.
