Pub of the Year: Spotlight on the Emmbrook InnBy Laura Herbert
February 08, 2013
For the last two decades John Hibbert has been running various Wokingham town centre pubs – and he kicks off our Pub of the Year competition.
He has been landlord of the Hope & Anchor and Queen’s Head, but for the past 10 years he and his wife Christine have been pulling pints at The Emmbrook Inn, in Emmbrook Road.
He’s witnessed changes over the years and has continually come up with new ways of attracting customers.
He said: “You have got to push the food these days.
“It’s amazing the number of people who wander in just for food, especially as it is becoming more expensive in restaurants.
“We have a nice, friendly atmosphere that our locals like – we look after them and they look after us.”
Mr Hibbert added: “Our locals also like sport and we have Sky TV. With the Six Nations starting it has been really busy.”
The Emmbrook hosts a regular karaoke night and live music events and a Sunday night quiz with cash prizes.
The pub also offers 12 letting rooms for accommodation.
Mr Hibbert said: “Until the credit crunch the letting rooms were going really well but it dropped off. I lowered the prices and it has been booming again and we have lots of customers who come back.”
