Demand for food parcels soarsBy Caroline Cook

Volunteers at a Woodley food store designed to help out needy families say the demand for food parcels has “grown beyond our expectations” as people struggle with tough times.
The Woodley Churches Together relaunched its food store in November last year after being given use of a bigger room at Coronation Hall in Headley Road by the town council.
And the group says demand has soared during the winter period with around 20 parcels a month being delivered to those in need.
Margaret Barter, who volunteers with the food store, said: “After a slow start at the relaunch of the Woodley Food Store, the need for food has grown beyond our expectations.
“The Christians in Woodley who run it are delivering over 20 parcels a month now and we have a great team of volunteers.
“At present the need is not so much for more volunteers but for food and reaching the clients who are in need.”
Families who are struggling to put meals on the table are invited to contact the food bank which provides parcels of tins, packets and essential items to help them cope.
But with such a demand for help the service is in need of extra food to keep deliveries going.
Mrs Barter said: “The food we are short of at present is coffee, cereal, tins of meat, rice sugar and squash and fruit juices.
“We have been amazed at how fast it has grown and we have a super band of volunteers but what we are short of is food.”
Generous parishioners from churches in Woodley have been donating a variety of food with pasta, rice pudding, snack bars, chocolate and breakfast cereals all going out in food parcels.
The main drop-off point for food is Woodley Baptist Church in Hurricane Way where volunteers collect the items and take them to the store at Coronation hall.
They are then sorted and packed into family and single parcels.
Anyone who knows someone in need who may benefit from the parcels, or anyone who would like to donate food, should call the food store from 9am to 12.30pm Monday to Friday on (0118) 969 9956.
