Team offers toads safe passage

April 28, 2009

Toads on Wokingham  roads have had their way smoothed with the introduction of new crossing signs.

They are the work of vet Phil Elliott, who works at Denton Veterinary Surgery in Denton Road.

Every year, newts and toads are killed trying to cross roads to get to ponds.

Now, drivers will have a warning that the active amphibians are on the move nearby.

The signs have been put up at established toad crossing spots in the borough.

Volunteers go to the crossings in February to pick the toads up and carry them across the roads to help their migration.

Mr Elliott said: “The migration has finished until February next year and we helped around a thousand toads between four crossings.”

The signs have been put up at four toad crossings in Farley Hill, New Wokingham Road, Edneys Hill, Popes Meadow in Binfield and Chavey Down Road.

Recently there have been loads of toads in the KeepHatch estate just wandering around the roads, and if they are still there when the sun sets, they lose energy to move. By then, the cars come home and that's it. I tried to move a few away to the bushes at the side of the road, but there'd just be more there the next day. Shame. Can we have a sign?
