Soldiers set the pace for London 2012 games

By Alice Murphy
September 25, 2008

Soldiers took to the starting blocks to mark the Olympic handover from Beijing to London last week.

They dashed from Wokingham Borough Council’s offices in Shute End to the base of The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), Arborfield Garrison, in a relay sprint.

The young runners gave the baton, which held an Olympic flag, to Brigadier Brian McCall during the ceremony on Wednesday, September 17.

Brigadier McCall himself is a former Irish international rugby player and was part of the team who won the Five Nations Triple Crown in 1985.

The team was made up of Craftsman John Woodman, Craftsman Marvis Deeble, Craftsman Daniel Gittins, Craftsman Stephen Marsh, Craftman Michael Tombs and Craftsman Becky Hoare, who is on the GB Junior Orienteering Team.

They carried the Olympic flag in pairs all the way.
