Superfast broadband coming to Wokingham

By Jon Nurse
February 27, 2013

Superfast broadband is set to speed into homes after the borough council confirmed involvement in a delivery programme.

Wokingham Borough Council is joining support for the Government’s scheme to provide 90 per cent of the country access to superfast broadband and 100 per cent access to internet speeds of at least two megabytes per second by 2015.

Broadband providers will roll out a programme to 92 per cent of Berkshire, with the Superfast Berkshire Project working together to provide superfast broadband to the remaining eight per cent.

The council’s executive voted unanimously to enter a collaboration agreement with neighbouring authorities at a meeting on Thursday, committing to a project members said would particularly benefit communities in areas like Wargrave and Arborfield where work is not seen as commercially viable by broadband providers.

Councillor Anthony Pollock, executive member for finance, said: “The benefit of broadband from a business perspective is very strong.”

The council has dedicated £182,553 of capital funding over three years to the scheme, which will go towards the £1.5 million budget for the whole of Berkshire.

Councillor Angus Ross, executive member for the environment, added: “In parallel with this project we should be monitoring home businesses relying on mobile connection for internet.
