Join Curves for the price of a bag of food

By Lucy Allen
February 25, 2013

Anyone joining Curves gym in Wokingham next month can do so for the price of just one bag of food.

For all of March, the Denton Road gym will waive its joining fee for new members in return for non-perishable food, which will be donated to the Wokingham branch of the Salvation Army.

Existing members of the women-only gym will also be encouraged to donate food as part of the annual Curves Food Drive.

Bev Gellard, owner of Curves Wokingham, said: “Collecting non-perishable food during the Food Drive is something which unites the Curves community globally and we’re delighted to champion the Salvation Army, whose goals of supporting and strengthening people in the local community match Curves’ core values extremely well.

“The Food Drive is a vital part of our community programme that fits perfectly with the Curves philosophy of promoting positive health and creating a community for ‘real women’.”

Curves Wokingham has been collecting and donating to charity during the Food Drive for the past seven years and has so far collected an impressive total of more than 4,300lbs of food.

I don't want to join Curves, no, but I don't want to join the masons either, nor a sexist golf course that doesn't allow female members. In fact anywhere that gives people special priviliges based purely on their gender, sexuality, race, religion etc etc (ie areas covered under discrimination law) is not somewhere with which I would want to be associated, and I don't believe should exist. Curves is one example of that. Ladies nights at nightclubs is another, and one that is technically illegal but continues despite the law. Differences in insurance prices is another that is now illegal under EU law.

Allowing people to segregate or differentiate themselves on any grounds just breeds insecurity in society and alienates people, denying certain groups the right to equality. If we want to integrate as a society, we cannot segregate ourselves into zones into which certain groups of people cannot pass (areas that could involve nudity are obvious exceptions, but one in which both genders are given equal rights).

mavdo, Wokingham, you're right, we should refuse to join any club which doesn't want us.

A gym where half the population are banned from joining simply because of their gender? I disapprove of any such rules because they are about inequality. I would have exactly the same stance against golf clubs still being men-only, and the masons. Even the brownies and guides still restrict by gender. Nowhere should be allowed to restrict membership or entry by gender, race, sexuality, or disability, or anything else (except gender specific changing rooms and toilets, of course...).

Some gyms I have been in have women only sections of the gym or women only gym rooms, so where are the men only gyms? What if I don't want women looking at me while I burn off some of my excess curries? Why is that feeling restricted to women? Why can they have privacy, but not me, when I pay the same amount?

Gender inequality irritates me particularly when some of those benefiting from it complain so bitterly over gender inequality.

A franchise originating in the us, which doesn't show the membership fees on its website. Run away.
