McDonald's brings new jobs to Reading
February 21, 2013
Fast food giant McDonald’s has announced it will be creating more jobs throughout the UK and Reading is not missing out.
The restaurant chain says it will create at least 15 new jobs in the town throughout the year as part of a nationwide commitment to employ 2,500 more staff.
McDonald’s made the same pledge in 2012 and exceeded the figure by 1,000, bringing the total of its current UK workforce to 91,000.
The posts have been created partly by the opening of new restaurants and extended opening hours.
McDonald’s franchisee Pru Naik, who owns five restaurants in Reading, said: “In 2012 we added some fantastic crew from the local community to our team, many of whom were starting out in their first job and may otherwise not have had the opportunity to join the world of work.
“As a local employer, I believe it’s important for all those who can to continue giving young people in particular the chance to get workplace experience.
“I’m confident that in the year ahead there will be the same level of enthusiasm and talent from candidates in Reading and I’m looking forward to employing even more young people in my restaurants.”
McDonald’s now offers apprenticeships, which gives employees the chance to gain qualifications while working.
Emma Young, 18, who joined the Forbury Retail Park restaurant in January last year, is one member of staff who has benefited.
She said: “I was thrilled when I found out I’d successfully secured a job at McDonald’s, especially given the tough job market.
“I didn’t have many qualifications when I came out of school so the McDonald’s apprenticeship scheme, which allowed me to gain qualifications at the same time as making money, was attractive.
“I knew it would open so many doors for me. I completed the scheme last year and now help others with theirs.”
She continued: “I’d like to move up the ladder at McDonald’s. At the moment I’m training to be a shift manager, with the aim of working my way towards becoming an assistant manager in a few years time.”
