Shoppers' Reaction to HMV closure

By Becky Barnes
February 19, 2013

Following the news that Bracknell's HMV store is to close, getbracknell asked shoppers in Bracknell town centre what they thought about the closure.

Geoff Green, 62, a lecturer at Bracknell and Wokingham College: “I am sad it is going because I use it quite a lot for CDs and DVDs. I work in Bracknell so I use the book shops and HMV – now I am going to have to shop elsewhere. The internet has a lot to do with it, but I prefer to come and browse in my lunch hour as it is when I may find something I want.”

Bryony Albery, 22,from Warfield: “I think it is gutting. HMV is one of the last media shops on the high street.

There are not many places you can thumb through and browse.”

Nine HMV staff to lose jobs

Vincent Albery, 27, from Warfield: “It is difficult because I tend to buy CDs and DVDs online but I am worried how on earth are we supposed to have an economy if there are no jobs for anyone. I am not sure what will be left in the town centre. Unless I want ladies’ clothing I am not sure what I will come in for.”

Bracknell's HMV indentified for closure

Sarah Davies, 39, a part-time account manager, from Warfield: “I am not surprised it is closing – I get everything off Amazon. Even box sets can be £10 or £20 more in HMV, whereas places like Amazon can afford to keep prices low as they don’t have the overheads of a shop and staff.

“For DVDs, gaming and music, online is the way it is going but it is a shame for those who are going to lose their jobs.”

Paul Fuller of Great Hollands: “It is devastating news and devastating for the economy. I am an ex-retail manager and this makes me want to start a campaign to make people stop buying off Amazon. HMV is an iconic name. I am very sad this store is closing. We need a campaign on Facebook to save the high street. People should pay a few pounds more to taxpaying high street retailers.”

Possibly Amazon is also cheaper as they evade paying taxes in this country.

I've never found HMV to be cheaper than Amazon, Play, Zavvi etc - if they were cheaper, or even comparable then people would have used them. It's a shame, but not a surprise.

With reference to Amazon being cheaper than HMV....well yes, if you went into an HMV store, you'd generally pay a lot more, however, HMV.com was pretty much the same, if not cheaper (postage was free, with Amazon you have to pay) Perhaps this explains a few things...if people were aware that the website was actually approx. the same prices as Play, Amazon etc. maybe things wouldn't have got so bad....

In 10 years time we'll forget we had stores like HMV to buy media from, just like we forgot that there used to be blacksmiths and carpenters on the high street we could order our wrought iron gates and staircases from.

Times change; this isn't always a good thing but we react to these changes and move on. People used to have a trade and I'm afraid to say that selling DVDs isn't one which will get anyone very far.

Those who are really interested in media and sales, and not just wanting any any old job, will end up working directly for the thriving music/media or field sales industry, just like smiths and chippies now do.

Agreed, there may be less work for skilled professionals out there now but at least it makes way for those who are passionate and highly talented.

Good luck to those unfortunate 9 - especially to the long tenure ones who I saw on a regular basis.
