Reading East well placed for superfast broadband

January 30, 2013

The Reading East MP has found it’s good to talk to BT about the coverage of superfast broadband across his constituency.

Rob Wilson has been campaigning for improvements to broadband infrastructure in the area.

At the moment there are four types of broadband available in Reading East for consumers, small medium enterprises (SMEs) and larger businesses.

They are copper (ADSL) at speeds of up to 8Mb, enhanced copper to deliver higher speeds of up to 20Mb, fibre at speeds of up to 80Mb and high capacity fibre broadband leased lines, aimed predominantly at larger businesses and some SMEs.

There are currently 66,000 premises in Reading East with access to superfast broadband at speeds of up to 80Mb – 18,000 in South Reading, 13,000 in Earley, 13,000 in Caversham and 22,000 in Central Reading.

BT confirmed to Mr Wilson that it is in a position to upgrade all those on superfast broadband to ultrafast – for a fee.

This will bring speeds of around 300Mb – fast enough for some high-tech or media driven businesses.

Mr Wilson said: “My constituency is doing fairly well since 2010 for high speed broadband. There is now plenty of investment from Government and private providers.

“Reading East is in a good position to attract further high-tech companies and world class organisations – which will be good for jobs and growth.

“This is particularly true as we are one of the first areas to have 4G mobile infrastructure.”

What a ridiculous comment from him.

The fee for this is £500 for the install then a variable fee of around £1,000.

Everywhere in the country will get it, no idea why Rob Wilson is trying to make it sound like he has done anything for Reading regarding Broadband.

He hasn't done a thing.
