4G is coming to Reading by March

By David Millward
January 03, 2013

Superfast 4G mobile is coming to Reading in the first three months of the year, the UK’s largest mobile network operator has announced.

EE has said Reading will be one of 18 towns to be switched on to 4G by March, giving businesses and consumers connections five times greater than 3G.

Mobile customers will be able to download large email attachments more quickly, watch live TV on phones without buffering and make high quality video calls.

Olaf Swantee, chief executive officer at EE, said: “By the end of the first quarter of 2013, 4G will be available in 35 towns and cities across the UK, making superfast mobile accessible to thousands more customers and businesses every day.

“This has struck a chord with businesses in particular, with great demand being seen.

“We’re delighted to already be powering large, medium and small businesses with 4G.”

EE was created in 2010 through a merger of T Mobile and Orange and became the first company in the UK to provide 4G mobile services alongside fixed-line fibre.

Peter Turner - I fear Humpty Dumpty doesn't like this "balance" you speak of...

MY reception since Orange became EE has also gotten worse.

I live right nr town and used to always have full reception most of the time but now it's like i'm in the countryside.

I have been less than impressed with EE's service in local areas. Perhaps they should get all areas up to a reasonable standard before show boating with 4G .....

Yes this is news worthy & EE will get good PR. Because of my experience of very poor basic service in some well populated areas and some equally poor customer service I'm doing my little bit to add a little balance ....

The comment regarding negativity with regards to Reading was more aimed at the fact that any story, however positive, is met with instant negativity by the majority of commenters on here.

I am with EE and have experienced a few signal issues, but nothing absurd. Yes there are a few dead spots, but to be honest there are many fewer now Orange and T-mobile have joined.

@Grumpy girl - What is this signal booster you speak of? EE have a signal booster app that allows you to use a wifi connection to make calls (inclusive in your service plan) just as normal, and it is free!

@Peter Turner - The fact is 4G coming to Reading is newsworthy and that does mean that EE are going to get some free PR, like it or not.

Completely agreed, although I'm sure we'd be saying the same whoever had the initial 4G contract!

GrumpyGirl - good point well made ...

I'm not pro any service provider - but as I've said EE don't deserve positive PR for this commercial decision .....

Peter Turner, unfortunately it's not just EE. I'm on Vodafone, and my signal used to be great, but it suddenly dropped constantly, meaning I often can't use my mobile in my house. Coincidently, about 2 weeks later, Vodafone launched their signal booster at a cost of £100. All most of these providers care about is getting you onto their network, beyond that, they don't seem to care at all about the service they provide.

Humpty Dumpty you appear to be a little over sensitive. NONE of the comments are “moaning” about Reading.

My comment reflects my experience of EE and their service levels in some areas near Reading. They have confirmed to me that they have no plans to improve service in these areas so I am trying to make sure people think carefully before they enter into a contract with EE. 4G may be very good for those in Reading who are prepared to pay as long as they don’t also want reliable basic services in some areas near Reading.

Talking of moving, I’d love to move away from EE. I’m so keen to have reliable service I’m prepared to move to another service provider although EE will force me to pay them until the end of my contract. However, I’ve been waiting two months for EE to provide an unlock code for my phone.

I certainly have nothing against Reading. But I don’t think EE deserve to get free positive advertising because they have made this commercial decision!

Quit moaning. How do you guys turn every story in to something negative about Reading? Go and live somewhere else if you don't like Reading and if you have already moved don't bother getting worried about the town.

New partnerships & deployments always have teething troubles. 4G is good for Reading business, though costs are currently painful.

   I agree ;-)

However - it is nice to know you can be contacted in an emergency. With EE I've received text messages over 6 hours after they were sent.

Actually, "Now" was the first company to offer 4g in this country, and it is available in Reading now, along with Southwark and Swindon.
