Business profile: Trade Flooring OutletBy David Millward
August 07, 2012
The boss: The business is run by both Brian Duval and Chad Bamsey, who have been in the flooring business since leaving school, so they have over 50 years experience. “We were both running successful flooring companies and decided to team up together after being good friends for the last 20 years.”
What is your business about? “We have set up a flooring retail unit with very low overheads so it is possible to offer top-brand products at low prices. At the same time we offer a level of service that’s second to none.
“The internet is really hurting many flooring companies because they can offer very low prices for the same products as retail shops. We decided to open up a retail unit that offers prices similar to the internet.
“The customer is definitely the winner with us because they get their flooring at internet prices but with the safety of knowing we’re not a virtual business.”
What products/services do you offer? “We can generally supply most types of flooring. We offer free advice, free estimates, a free planning service and can bring samples to our customers day or evening, at home or at work, we carry out free damp testing and do all types of sub-floor preparation. We are happy to move furniture and uplift and dispose of old flooring.”
How and when did you start your business? “We started Trade Flooring Outlet in June this year. We have already taken many orders and its going well.
“We already had quite a high customer base from our existing companies so it’s been a bit easier for us.”
How many staff do you employ? “We currently have two full-time fitting teams. We are looking to employ another estimator in the near future and we will need another fitting team soon.”
Who are your customers? “We are happy to do small repair jobs in private homes, bespoke flooring or big commercial projects. We cover a 30-mile radius of Reading but are frequently quoting outside this area. We also work with estate agents and local authorities.”
What sets you apart from the competition? “The fact we have a retail unit that offers prices as low as the internet. We do not need to pressure sell and there’s no sales commission. We let our prices sell themselves.
“Nearly all retail shops have high mark-ups because they need to pay their overheads and staff. We are confident we can beat any genuine like-for-like quote and welcome the challenge.”
How has the recession affected business? “We started this business in the recession and we believe we will see it through okay. Our overheads are as low as they can be and our customers are definitely seeing this reflected in our prices.”
How do you feel about the future? “Very positive. We are very confident with how we run things. We really look after our customers and offer excellent service and installations at the very best prices.
“As long as flooring is needed we will be fine.”
