Lakeland star nominated for Reading Retail Awards
June 14, 2012
A committed member of staff at a town centre kitchenware store has been put forward as a Shooting Star in the Reading Retail Awards.
Joyce Manning has been nominated by a colleague for her hard work organising open evenings at the Lakeland store, at The Oracle.
The deadline is fast approaching for employers and staff to enter their colleagues and businesses for this year’s awards.
Ms Manning, of Calcot, was nominated by colleague Tracey Saich, who was shortlisted in the same category last year.
She said: “Joyce is a committed member of staff who does everything to the very best and highest standard.
“She has put every effort into the recent customer evening, both organising it and working hard on the night to make sure it went as well as it could do.”
Ms Manning, 56, started at Lakeland when The Oracle store opened in September 2009 and has taken on the task of organising promotional events.
She said: “We are trying to organise four customer evenings a year so we contact manufacturers to come in and do demonstrations or get colleagues who have a particular interest in a product to demonstrate them.
“We put up posters in the shop and handed out invitations and I contacted head office who set up a Facebook page and put it on the website. We got a good response.”
Ms Manning said she enjoys working for the shop, which ties in nicely with her own interests.
She said: “We are here to serve customers and that’s what I try to do to the best of my ability.
“It’s good fun.
“It’s a kitchenware store and I love the stock we sell and I love cooking and baking.”
Judges in the business section of the retail awards will also be considering a nomination for the Apple store in The Oracle, which has been nominated in the Multiple Retailer of the Year category.
A business customer, who did not submit a name, said after several visits: “Every time I have come away very happy that my problems or questions were resolved, that I’d gained a better understanding of how to avoid similar problems, and that whoever had helped me had given me a sensible idea or two on how to tackle things more efficiently.
“The staff at the store are an absolute delight in their helpfulness, knowledge and individuality.”
Other categories in the business section are: promotional initiative of the year; store design and environment of the year; independent retailer of the year; store manager of the year and learner of the year.

Closing date for entries is Monday, July 2.
