Barry Lewis is chairman of the Berkshire branch of the IoD.
As managing director of a number of successful businesses, including software and services provider, CADline Ltd, Lewis is an experienced leader with a strong professional network in the South East.
At the beginning of the month I attended Teentech at Ascot Racecourse.
This is an amazing event that has been running in Berkshire since 2008, where 14-year-olds get a chance to meet and engage with businesses in the field of science, engineering and technology.
It is an opportunity for those businesses to dispel the myths that these subjects are only relevant for geeks and it gives schoolchildren the chance to get ‘hands on’ with practical experiences.
The first Teentech event ran in Berkshire in 2008, and it is something that the IoD has sponsored and been involved with since its early beginnings.
We feel that it is absolutely vital to engage with young people as early as possible.
Grounding in business is essential for all school leavers and Teentech excels at demonstrating the mix of engineering and technology with practical business insight.
Of course, this is also an opportunity for our members to put something back into the educational system, and working with the Berkshire Education Business Partnership, more than 35 business ambassadors were involved with the 300 students who attended the event this year.
Teentech is a fantastic opportunity to inspire and be inspired – I left feeling energised and positive about the future!
