Firms urged to look East for business

Companies in Wokingham can forge closer links with the Orient after a business group won the rights to start a new project to build relations with firms in China.

Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce has been selected from chambers around the country to launch the ‘Link to China’ project, which is being supported by local councils and Reading University.

The scheme was launched at a meeting of Business Insight on Friday last week at Ascot Racecourse.

The speaker at the event was Dr Kegang Wu, the chief China advisor to the British Chambers of Commerce.

Dr Wu spoke to delegates about how the collaboration will benefit the business community in the Thames Valley.

He was also on hand to answer members’ questions on trade opportunities with businesses in the Asian country and why all businesses should have a “China strategy”.

After the presentation, 40 members of the chamber signed up to the scheme and will be working with the organisation’s contacts to find out which businesses in China would be a good match for partnership working.

Mark Ashwell, chairman of Wokingham Chamber of Commerce, was present at the launch meeting.

He said: “If you are going to do business with China it can take months or years to find which region your own business is best off talking to.

“What this new link does is match businesses to the right area in China, so all you have to do is contact the chamber and they can get you talking to the right people quicker.”

Paul Briggs, chief executive of the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce Group, said: “At a time of well publicised high-level Government activity to develop close political and economic links between UK businesses and China, we are delighted to launch Link to China.

“A key factor to doing business, particularly in China, is the development of good working relationships as, without spending time on this, there will be limited opportunities.

“I believe the ‘Link to China’ initiative will give Thames Valley businesses a head start.

“This programme has a number of key strategic partners here in the Thames Valley and represents an excellent opportunity for trade opportunities in Chinese regions.”

Ginette Gower, from the chamber, said: “One of the things that came across at the meeting was a lot of people think you have to have some goods to export to China, but in fact they are looking for professional services – companies to work over there and provide services in partnership with local companies.”

I don't understand jethro's comment. The main thing that the government needs to really get out of the current debt crisis is more exports whether they are of goods or services. Any small step in correcting the balance of payments with China is a step in the right direction.

Obliquely suggesting that the curent government is anyway facist is neither correct nor helpful in creating the required relationships.
