Business profile: Complete Physiotherapy LimitedBy David Millward
November 05, 2010
The boss: David Kershaw. Since completing degrees in sports rehabilitation and physiotherapy at St Mary’s University College and the University of East Anglia, he has held positions in the elite sporting arena as head physiotherapist at Lancashire County Cricket Club and Oldham Athletic Football Club and as consultant physiotherapist at Bristol City FC.
He said: “I have always dreamed of opening my own clinic and since moving to Reading to do so in 2007 I haven’t looked back. Since opening the Caversham clinic I have also opened in Henley, plus got married and had a baby daughter.”
What is your business about? “Complete Physiotherapy Limited is an established company offering a unique and elite service to all of our patients.
"Since establishing the clinic I have selected two highly-qualified physiotherapists to join the team and together we offer a wealth of experience gained from professional sport and private practice. With our combined experience covering injuries sustained in elite sports, such as the British gymnastics, judo and equestrian teams, we have encountered a multitude of complex injuries and strains demanding accurate diagnosis and immediate treatment.
"It is this expertise which allows us to assess and treat individual needs to ensure they obtain maximum results from their treatment.
"What makes us ‘Complete’ is that we also have the services of a sports masseuse offering a range of relaxation treatments including hot stones therapy, plus an acupuncturist and a hypnotherapist.”
What sets you apart from the competition? “At Complete Physiotherapy we particularly pride ourselves on providing a personal one-to-one service to all patients, where you are seen by the same physiotherapist for each session of your treatment and never ‘short changed’ by being massaged by an assistant. We also guarantee an appointment within 24 hours.”
How and when did you start your business? “In June 2007 my partner and I decided we would relocate to start a business. After performing detailed market research there seemed to be a niche market for physiotherapy in Reading.
"Once the business plan was complete and we found a suitable location for a clinic, Complete Physiotherapy was able to open on January 10, 2008, and then in January 2009 a second clinic opened at LA Fitness in Henley.”
How many staff do you employ? “Complete employs nine members of staff; three physiotherapists, a massage therapist, an acupuncturist, a hypnotherapist and three reception staff.”
Who are your customers? “Clients are as varied as the community we live in. We are registered with all major insurance companies so anyone with health insurance can be treated. Since opening we have won many corporate contracts.”
How has the recession affected business? “Business seems to be consistent overall, but the method in which patients are coming to us is varying as a result. It has meant that I’ve been kept on my toes and had to work even harder to source new business opportunities.”
How do you feel about the future? “We have smashed all targets set in the initial business plan, so I am feeling confident.”
