The Prince of Wales has selected a member of staff at a Bracknell company as his 2010 Prince’s Ambassador for the South East for his leadership and commitment to the community working with business.
David Cook, general manager for corporate marketing and public affairs for 3M in Cain Road, was confirmed in the role by Prince Charles via a video message.
The Prince is president of the charity Business in the Community (BITC), which mobilises business for good and works to build a sustainable future for people and planet.
The Prince was not present at the awards event at Madjeski Stadium in Reading on Friday, June 25.
However he said on the video: “David has been a member of my South East Leadership for a number of years and has been focused on the skills shortage amongst young people identified in the South East
“He has taken a leading role in developing Business in the Community’s strategy for expansion in and around the Bracknell and Reading area and has actively championed the development of our work in the field of education.”
The Prince expressed his delight in the appointment and gratitude to David for his work.
He had chosen David for his work in Bracknell and Reading, focusing on a shortage of skills in the areas of science, engineering and maths.
David said: “It’s a huge honour, but it’s really for the company’s work rather than me.
“We have been working at promoting the skill sets in the Reading and Bracknell areas.
“We’ve been trying to get the message across that engineering, maths and science aren’t boring things for men with beards and sandals.
“We have been working with local children and supported them
with ventures like sponsoring a ‘maths marathon’ at Garth Hill School.”
The company has launched two new websites, one aimed at primary school children and another, 3M worldly-wise, aimed at educating children and their parents.
There are also 80 members of staff at the company who go out and spend their time working with people in the community.
