Kerrie Sonja Newton of Karma Senses has introduced new treatments to Reading
Helping you to heal mind, body and spirit
Before choosing to focus on developing a career in the beauty and massage industry, Kerrie Sonja Newton worked in production, making documentaries in London.
What is your business about?
"Karma Senses (as featured in City Woman, October 2009) specialise in lava shell, Hydrotherm, Indian head and Swedish massage. We also offer healing, holistic facials, workshops and pamper parties for children and adults. We have received great feedback about our treatments that heal mind, body and spirit."
How and when did you start the business?
"Karma Senses was initially a mobile business formed in November 2008. My interest in massage developed as I searched for a more balanced and satisfying lifestyle. Karma Senses are proud to bring new innovative treatments to Reading. We’re the first to offer lava shell massage in the area and will continue this trend in the future. I am now launching Hydrotherm which is massage delivered on a warm water pillow. The pillow supports the body (along with heat) for deep relaxation."
Where did the name come from?
"In 2008 I was sipping hot chocolate with a therapist friend trying to think of a name for the business. I chose ‘Karma’ because I identified with the idea that ‘what we do now can affect us later’. Spiritually this really resonated with me. It is important to get that we have a level of responsibility for ourselves and others. ‘Senses’ because I want to offer treatments that support all the senses, a truly holistic approach. This is also why we use organic, paraben-free SpaRitual and Neal’s Yard products in our treatments."
Who are your clients?
"I cater for men, women and children of all ages. I’ve noticed career and family women aged 25 to 60 are my most frequent clients. It’s great because these women often refer their partners, family and friends."
What do you think of your salon’s location?
"The salon is ideally located in a mainly residential area and is far enough from town to avoid competition. Why pay for parking and town centre prices when you can come to us with free available on-street parking, amazing treatments, service and affordable prices?"
Is now a good time to be running a small business?
"Any time is the right time to run a business if you have a great idea, talent, passion, commitment, and the right support. I’m very lucky because my family and friends are very supportive."
What makes you stand out in the market?
"Professionalism, flexibility and high level attitude to customer service means we are developing great relationships and loyal customers. Karma Senses pride ourselves on being, friendly, productive, innovative and effective."
What’s it like being your own boss?
"It’s a fun and satisfying learning experience that I’m really enjoying. I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone which can be nerve racking, and so exciting. I love it."
Are you confident about the future?
"I am very confident about the future, because I’m focused on being the best therapist and business woman I can be."
