Sir John Madejski slips down The Rich List

By Linda Fort
April 26, 2010

Sir John Madejski has slipped down the Sunday Times Rich List 2010 but he still has a few pennies in the bank.

Sir John was in 222nd place last year but this year he finds himself at 309th with his £200 million fortune, sharing the slot  with financiers, property magnates, restaurateurs and oil and horse racing tycoons.

The Madejski millions were made through the magazine Auto Trader which Sir John sold in 1998 for £174 million.

The Rich List estimates his cash worth has slipped by £50 million over the last year but he is still richer than Simon Cowell who is worth a mere £165 million and – although rising – can still only muster 398th place.

As well as owning Sackville Properties, Sir John, 68, chairs and owns most of Reading Football Club and his other interests include Reading 107FM, a hotel in the Galapagos, a Chinese bottling plant and publishing and printing operations.

And her Majesty the Queen – who has a home in Windsor – has had a good year. Her personal wealth has risen by £20 million from £270million to £290 million but she has slipped down the Rich List from 214th to 245th.

@ spanky Other than his charitable work, promotion of anything that goes on in Reading & the Madejski Academy nothing. If I was as rich as him I would spend my time enjoing my money. SJM is a legend. Simples.

I suppose his fall in the richest table might mean he has to cut his funding for the Conservatives in Reading

Interesting article,is it really 12 years since Sir John and his business partner sold the Auto Trader? Whilst reading it i wondered how his[then] reported new auto trader project was getting on in the far east .presumably to tap into the then burgeoning market in bicycles and motorised rickshaws. If i recall correctly did he not leave the country just after his 'golden egg' was sold and resided in the far east for exactly 12 months to set up the new project.I mention this as that business is missing from the global list above,Ah! its probably been sold since.
