New signs put Reading on the map

March 18, 2010

Visitors will be able to find their way around Reading with ease thanks to these distinctive new street signs.

The town’s Explorer units – which pinpoint landmarks and tourist hotspots – have been completely redesigned.

Situated at 21 points around the town centre, the signs, complete with pocket maps, provide an insight into Reading’s colourful history, including the story behind the Simeon Monument in Market Place and historic pub The Sun Inn.

Tim Smith, executive director of Reading UK CIC, said: “It was important to find a strong new design for Explorer Units that provide really comprehensive mapping, but also tell the story of Reading.

“People are often surprised by our remarkable heritage and more often familiar with our present reputation as an economic powerhouse – our Explorer signs tell both stories.”

Councillor Tony Page, lead member for planning and transport, added: “The Explorer signage system is an award winner for Reading, and we were pleased to be able to work with private partners to fund this exciting redesign and renovation.”

The project was funded by Reading Borough Council and Reading UK CIC and overseen by the marketing group of Reading UK CIC led by destination manager Sue Brackley.

Now we know what the problem was, Reading was not on the map! Now all the empty offices and retail units will be filled because people will be able to find us. Brilliant idea. Why did we not have a map before?

Since when is Reading Football Club town centre based? I thought that Reading UK CIC was to support the town centre. Does that mean anyone can join to influence the Community Interest Company's decisions? I notice that Reading Borough Council is always funding this group. I wonder what the percentage of support for this group is in comparison to other charities who serve the local community.
