John Lewis staff storing up the smiles

By Paul Robins
March 12, 2010

Recession? What recession? Staff at John Lewis were rewarded for their sterling work with an eye-popping 15 per cent bonus.

Employees at the Broad Street store were jumping for joy yesterday when managing director Gordon Stenton unveiled their hefty handout – worth nearly eight weeks’ pay.

Reading’s sales figures, announced for the 12 months to January 2010, were 1.8 per cent up year-on-year thanks to a bumper Christmas.

The windfall came after the retail giant announced a healthy 2.8 per cent rise in yearly sales across its 26 stores to £2.9 billion.

The partnership bonus payment totals £151.3 million, which is £27 million higher than the 13 per cent given to each of the 70,000 partners last year.

There was a jubilant atmosphere in Reading as five partners used a giant arrow to burst the huge balloon containing the bonus envelope.

Among those celebrating was Jennifer Davis, 21, section manager of the linen department, who is putting the money towards her wedding.

She said: “There is no way I thought it would be higher than last year, so to get 15 per cent is absolutely fantastic. The money will go towards my dress and I will spend some of it on the bridesmaids too.”

Service desk worker Andy Ward, 40, intends to use the extra cash to prepare for the arrival of his first child in five weeks time.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It will help get our baby off to a good start. We all put the work and graft in for it.”

Despite the economic downturn, the John Lewis Partnership – which includes Waitrose – still reported a strong balance sheet, which showed a £454 million rise in group sales to £7.4 billion.

Mr Stenton said the Reading store had performed well thanks to the work of its staff. He said: “2009 was a year of two halves. The first half was challenging but the second half was fantastic.

“This was helped by a great Christmas period when sales increased by 6.6 per cent, despite the worst snow in 30 years.

“We have really focused on offering excellent customer service and I would like to thank all partners at John Lewis Reading for their continuous hard work and commitment.

“They thoroughly deserve this.”

The company has just begun a £14.1 million refurb of the Reading store which will include improvements to the lifts, flooring, lighting and shop frontage.

Charlie Mayfield, chairman of John Lewis Partnership, said: “Partners have shown tremendous commitment during changing times. I am therefore delighted they will share fairly in the financial rewards of a successful year.”

Richard Richard: I think the point PC Watch is making is that at John Lewis, the management value the staff. In return the staff are loyal and hardworking, with the result that the company does well. One of the reasons that BA and the Rail Network are highly unionised is because the relationship between management and staff is not as good. Hence, for their own protection (and one could argue the overall good of the companies concerned - a point you yourself allude to) BA & Rail staff join a Union.

Well done to the guys at John Lewis, one of the last remaining institutions in what has become very much a clone town of the rest of the UK's retailing. Good quality products and served by interested staff which is rather refreshing in this day and age.

pc watch..you no nothing about the terms/conditions at BA or network rail , the unions are fighting for safe working practices to continue and to develop better working conditions for their staff. They are not militant politically motivated union bosses they are normal people like you and i.No one wants another ladbroke grove, southall, level crossing incident, or poor levels of servicing/staffing when were at 30,000ft.That is what may well happen..what price is safety.Go get a life.

Totally understand the green eyed monster noodles! I'm in the NHS so no bonuses or paid Christmas events for us!

Well done though to John Lewis staff, I'm sure they all work really hard and their customer service is superb in my opinion.

As an ex partner with still many friends who are working in the former Heelas one being in the picture that goes with this story I can wholeheartly confirm that the these people and Waitrose partners work extremeley hard for their bonuses. The whole ethos of the John Lewis Partnership is very unique but still withstanding the test of time. To all the partners a very big well done to you and gutted the biggest bonus I received in 7 years was 13%.

Please accept my apologies for the down right miserable comments that I submitted below. I'm afraid the green-eyed monster reared it's ugly head there. I totally agree that the setup at John Lewis and Waitrose is superb. The quality of goods and customer service are both excellent. The staff deserve the reward. Long may it continue...

IMHO the partners of JLP are worth every penny of this "bonus". Be it Waitrose or the former Heelas always a pleasure to shop there and deal with staff who know what they are talking about.

Most people I know got a paltry payrise/bonus this year, but hey.....thanks for rubbing it in.

If ever there was an incarnation of Grace Bros. it definitely isn’t John Lewis Partnership.

What outstanding results for an outstanding business with impressive staff and management. The secret is the concept of working in partnership with the financial rewards of hard work and success shared by ALL the employees.

With the unions calling their members out on strike at BA and the rail network, perhaps theses industries should take a leaf from the John Lewis model then we wouldn’t get powerful militant politically motivated union bosses and shop stewards calling “Everybody Out!” at the drop of hat.

Well done everyone at John Lewis and Waitrose you’ve all done very well!

Brilliant.
