Trinity Mirror buys the Reading Post

February 09, 2010

The company which publishes the Reading Post, The Wokingham Times and The Bracknell Forest Standard has been sold by the Guardian Media Group to Trinity Mirror.

S&B Media, which publishes regional newspapers in Surrey and Berkshire will be managed as part of Trinity Mirror’s existing publishing business in the South of England.

Trinity Mirror said the acquired titles complemented its existing portfolio and reinforced its commitment to regional media. The deal is due to complete on March 28.

Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey said the deal was “a perfect strategic fit” for the group.

“This acquisition extends our reach across print and online and is a further step towards our strategic goal of creating a multi-media business of real scale,” she said.

Guardian, Mirror, what's the difference both trashy papers much like the EP has become in recent years. I wonder if trinity mirror actually want anything apart from the printing press itself?

I'm still waiting for how it's not a local paper for local people any more.

It's all gone quiet.

Saying something you think makes you look clever with nothing to back it up were we?

My mate Uppy McGuppy is the Production Manager for Trinity Mirror, so I know the paper will look nice even if no one buys it :O)

They've bought the Manchester Evening News as well, so two big deals in one day!!!

I, for one, refuse to accept the accusation that this series of media is or at any point in it's recent past has been biased in favour of Labour. If they generally wanted Labour to do well, they would stop taking the hysterically poorly written and misleading Reading Labour group press releases and reprinting them as news.

It goes even more left wing now... an uphill battle for Conservatives with a biased Labour newspaper in charge.

I doubt anything will change so no point getting your knickers in a twist just yet.

One who knows - Why do you think the Post will stop being a local paper? All that has happened is that it's been bopught from the Guardian (based in Manchester) by Trinity Mirror (based in London) so if we're talking about geography then the paper is now owned slightly more locally than it was. The point is that where the paper's owners are based doesn't matter at all. What matters is that the content (which in my book is pretty good) stays the same and I can't imagine a new company coming in just to mess up the operation. So then One Who Knows - what exactly do you know?

Trinity Mirror’s once ownership of the other Reading title The Chronicle didn’t do much to save that ailing from its present near oblivion circulation of just 8,000 copies per week. There’s more circulation in a Pizza leaflet drop!

Please explain how it's "no longer a local paper for local people".

That is misleading, unfounded, almost certainly untrue and generally rather iditoic.

Didn't Trinity Mirror own The Reading Chronicle until a couple of years back?

Bit strange that they have now bought the other local paper.

EP is one of the only profitable elements of S&B so unless the management are completely mad then there shouldn't be too many changes.

Will EP be able to afford a photographer at last. One who actualy goes out covering stories. As opposed to repetitive stock shots.
