IKEA buys land in Calcot

December 17, 2009

IKEA could be coming to Reading after the store has bought land in Calcot.

The Swedish furniture company has purchased the site in Pincents Lane and Berkshire Retail Park which is currently occupied by Dunelm Mill, Homebase, Carpet Right and Reading Bowl.

A spokeswoman for IKEA said: “As part of our expansion plans, IKEA has been identifying sites around the country for potential stores.

“One site that we have recently purchased is the Pincents Lane and Berkshire Retail Park in Theale.

“However, we have no confirmed plans for an IKEA store on this site yet.”

Ok Ikea from what I gather Ikea purchased the land 7years ago.. I may be wrong. Why have they suddenly decided to redevelop... personally I think they will team up with Blue Living who plan to develop 750+ homes on pincents hill. Both Ikea and Blue Living will have to sort out the road system near j12; why not cut the cost and go halves?

Yes woohoo you won't have to travel miles to go to Ikea but how many people will travel from miles to come to this store.. congestion on the roads which are already saturated. I cannot imagine how difficult it will be. You say Sainsburys has thousands of customers.. yes they do but they are all fairly local in comparison.

Agree Reading gets the grief and Newbury get the profits!

Only plus side I can see is the 400 jobs!

you must be joking one way,one way out. wait till all the buses and coaches are picking up/droping off nobody can move down around there, all the shoppers for sainsbury's,sports shop,macd's.....wrong locating, put it on green park that's got more entrance's/exit's...plus the one that goes west,it would be more ideal take the train there when it's built.......

Are you people serious? Ikea is an awful place. I just don't get this weird Swedish obsession. Everybody's house now looks the same!

Yippee for Ikea - Welcome to West Berkshire. It will save me the evening trek to Bristol, and you get free cups of tea with a family card. That said, I do recall that IKEA had an eye on a site on the old Basingstoke Road which came to nowt.

@ Detective John Kimble At least it is open, and it is in Reading, as opposed to having to go to Wokingham, Bracknell or Thatcham for a game of skittles with the kids.

they will still need to do something with the little roundabout - you have to take your life in your hands to come out of the road to homebased but would still love the fact that IKEA might be in Reading
