Union meet to decide if Fujitsu staff will strike

November 02, 2009

Fujitsu staff could strike after voting for industrial action over jobs, pay and pensions.

Results of a ballot by union Unite, released today, reveal 74 per cent of staff voted for strike action and 92 per cent voted for industrial action short of a strike.

Senior union representatives at Fujitsu were due to meet today to determine what action will take place.

Fujitsu staff set for ballot over job cuts

Staff at the firm’s Lovelace Lane office in Bracknell, were among those balloted after Fujitsu proposed changes to its pension scheme.

In August Fujitsu, which also has offices in Winnersh, announced it planned to cut 1,200 jobs, 10 per cent of its UK workforce.

It is estimated 4,000 employees could be affected by the pension scheme changes.

Peter Skyte, Unite national officer for IT and communications, said: “Unite members are asking why they should lose their jobs and tighten their belts when last year the company paid out about £150m to shareholders and around £1.6m to two directors as compensation for loss of of-fice.

“Fujitsu remains a highly profitable company and our members are insisting that the company must treat them fairly and increase pay, provide decent pensions, and consult meaningfully to minimise job losses and avoid compulsory redundancy.”
