Heathrow expansion will go ahead

By Paul Cassell
January 15, 2009

The Government has given the go-ahead for a third runway despite opposition from green campaigners and some MPs.

Transport secretary Geoff Hoon confirmed the proposal insisting it was the “right” move for the country and outlined proposals to tackle noise and air pollution.

The project has been backed by business and unions who say the development will lead to thousands of new jobs and boost competition.

Mr Hoon said doing nothing would damage the country’s economy and further announced an increased investment in public transport including high-speed rail links.

Critics have condemned the plan as an “environmental disaster” with 700 homes being demolished and flights increase from 480,000 to 702,000 by 2030.
