New plea for town Crossrail terminus

December 31, 2008

Reading East MP Rob Wilson is urging Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon to rethink CrossRail to make Reading its western terminus.

Rob Wilson is also calling on Mr Hoon for a rail link from Heathrow to Reading in 2009.

He said: “We are in a very difficult economic position that will get worse in 2009, so this is not a call for increased spending.

“It is important that planned Government capital spending is focused on projects that will have major economic and environmental payback over the next couple of decades and these two major rail projects will achieve this.

“I know other regions will also have their own priorities, but a strong case exists for Reading and the Thames Valley due to the under-investment it has had for decades.

"The Thames Valley is second only to the City as a wealth-creating region of the UK and it is extremely important that its beating heart, Reading, continues to put world class infrastructure in place.”

Mr Wilson said: “When Geoff Hoon gets back to work in January, I want CrossRail and Heathrow to be at the top of his in-tray.”
