Bus company up for third award

By Paul Cassell
October 29, 2008

Reading Buses’ super-green fleet has seen the transport company short-listed for its third industry award this year.

The firm is up for Bus Operator Innovation of the Year in the Operator Excellence Awards 2008 sponsored by bus trade magazine routeONE.

It follows the recent announcements that Reading Buses has been short-listed for two top UK Bus Awards 2008 for Shire Operator of the Year and Winning New Customers.

Reading Buses has the largest fleet of double-decker buses running on bio-ethanol in the world with 14 buses operating seven-days-a-week on its Premier Route 17.

James Freeman, chief executive, said: “Reading Buses is unique in its approach to environmental matters.

“In addition to the bio-ethanol double deck buses, other buses in the fleet are mainly Euro 4 standard and run on bio-diesel.

“The whole fleet is probably among the cleanest in Britain.”

Just a minute!!!! The whole of Reading went to a standstill because of the rain!! Car accidents!!! So as these buses have not yet perfected the heli-bus, they had to sit in the jams too!! And as for over crowding when arrive, have you tried to tell the people at the stops 'no more'?? I have seen a 17 cramed to the window and when the driver drove past the bus stop saying no, he was called all the names under the sun and the bloke tried to kick the bus!!!!!! I don't think they can win no matter what they do!

One downpour and the service goes into meltdown. 28 minute wait yesterday evening for a 4 or 6 (every ten minutes). Then the driver overloaded the bus.

You can contact the award ceremony organisers via by putting route one excellenceawards in goole and let them know what we, as residents of Reading, think.

Whilst I support some of their 'green' moves they certainly win the award for most rip-off fare increases in a single year. and driving passengers away from buses by charging them £1.90 for a 20 minute journey is not green.
