Web directory exposes rogue firms
March 25, 2008
Almost 12,000 companies in Reading have signed up to a new online business directory that exposes rogue tradesmen and promote good ones.
The Brownbook describes itself as an ‘open yellow pages’ that anyone can edit and leave reviews of their experiences of businesses and trades across the UK.
The free service ranks tradesmen based on their customers’ testimonials, putting power back in the hands of the consumer and giving reputable businesses the chance to develop their reputation via online word-of-mouth.
Entrepreneur Jerry Brown decided to set up the website after becoming sick and tired of being messed around by dodgy plumbers and cowboy builders.
“We’re launching in Reading with 11,923 businesses of every type already listed,” he said. “That’s around 95 per cent of all businesses in the area.
“Any business owner can find their listing or add it instantly for free, and they can immediately add additional contact and marketing information to help potential customers find and contact them, bringing them more quality enquiries.
“By encouraging existing customers to add positive reviews, business owners can use The Brownbook to build their local reputation and win new customers.”
