New M&S opens
August 09, 2006
Happy shoppers turned up in force in Caversham to try out its new Marks & Spencer store.
A crowd of about 50 people queued up at the entrance of the new Simply Food outlet in St Martin’s Precinct for the official opening yesterday
And it took just a few minutes for the 6,000 sq ft supermarket to fill up after a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony with staff, manager Matt Wyatt and Caversham councillor Steve Waite.
The shop, which boasts an on-site bakery and sells fresh food, pre-prepared meals and wine as well as flowers, gifts, card, newspapers, cookery items and a few clothes, opened on the site of the former Iceland supermarket.
Mr Wyatt, who runs the store with a team of 40 staff, said: “The aim is to provide a great service to the fantastic people of Caversham and offer them good quality products so they come back every day. It’s a fabulous addition to Caversham.”
Cllr Waite added: “It’s an essential for St Martin’s Precinct that there’s a strong retail presence and this is why M&S is going to be such a draw.
“This is a mini town centre and we need a big commercial player – I think everybody is going to benefit.”
The store will open seven days a week, between 8.30am and 9pm Monday to Friday, until 7pm on Saturdays and from 10am until 4pm on Sundays.
