TA CAPTAIN'S REWARD FOR WEBSITE DESIGN
November 29, 2001
Tim Matthews, aged 28, is a part-time TA captain in the Royal Logistics, and is based at Grantham in Lincolnshire.
Captain Matthews has been given the Commander-in-Chief's Commendation for Meritorious Service to the Army, signed by General Sir Mike Jackson.
The rarely granted official recognition for outstanding achievement was made after he spent almost a year of his spare time designing 300 interactive web pages for his regiment.
Cpt Matthews' former commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Mike Robinson, said the Army was delighted to present him with the award.
He said: "As well as settling into new challenges in his civilian job, getting married, doing his normal TA training and other activities, he managed to find time to take on this project as well.
"The Army now has a superb recruiting website at a fraction of what IT companies would charge."
Cpt Matthews said the commendation was as a complete surprise to him.
He said: "I am very honoured to have received it. I have been able to use my military knowledge, IT expertise and Dell's own leading-edge project management techniques to get the website established within the Army's own recruiting area on the web.
"I am very grateful for the interest shown in the project by the Dell Corporation and for their firm support for members of Britain's Reserve Forces."
