Call to raise profile of engineers
July 24, 2001
The Maiden Erlegh man says the industry is reeling from a 40 per cent drop in graduates entering the profession.
The new chairman said: "There is a shortage of graduates and young people going into engineering and we are starting to suffer from a shortage.
"One of the ways to attract people is to raise its profile."
Mr Simpson, now head of the ACE, which has 650 member companies across the UK, aims to lobby government to give science and maths greater emphasis at school, to get more stories about its work in newspapers and get companies into schools to speak to would-be workers.
But Mr Simpson, a member of Maiden Erlegh Rotarians, warned: "We are starting to suffer. There is such a shortage that people are bringing overseas engineers to help."
