getbusiness: Are you ready for iPad and Surface?By Graham Jones

Are you taking the tablets?
The world seems to have gone tablet mad and Microsoft has launched its competitor to the iPad called “Surface”.
Not sure people will want to brag “I’ve just bought a surface” in the same way they might say “Look at my iPad”, but apparently the marketing folk at Microsoft must know something about the way people tick that us mere mortals don’t.
What is clear though, is that we are moving towards an even more mobile world.
Tablet computers are part of that creeping revolution where people are accessing all sorts of information, literally in the palms of their hands. But research consistently shows that most businesses are unprepared for this change.
Websites from the vast majority of businesses cannot be viewed easily on mobile phones or tablet computers. Not only is the wrong technology being used in many instances, but the formatting is incorrect for the smaller screens. The result is most businesses are missing out on connecting with people who use mobile devices.
Tablet devices and mobile phones require websites to be built using technology known as “responsive” – where the design of the page automatically adapts to the kind of technology being used to view it. Yet, few business websites appear to do this.
What this means is that what works really well on tablet devices is becoming dominated by big media companies and top brands. There is only one solution to this: review your website to make sure it is responsive and that it can be viewed on tablets properly. Otherwise you could lose business.
It is another example of the world moving at an increasingly rapid pace forcing those of us in business to constantly catch up. The trouble is, with even more changes in the technology pipeline unless you catch up quick, you could easily become history.
